Legislation in Hong Kong

In Hong Kong , assisted reproductive technology (ART) is governed by the Human Reproductive Technology Ordinance (Cap.561, Laws of Hong Kong). Under section 8 of the Ordinance, the Code of Practice on Reproductive Technology and Embryo Research (the Code) has been produced to provide guidelines for ART service providers and embryo research in Hong Kong.

Under the guidelines, ART treatment should only be provided to legally married couples. In addition, in accessing clients' suitability for ART treatment, the welfare of the child is of paramount importance. The couple should understand that the following factors will be considered in assessing their suitability for ART treatment:

  • their physical, mental and social wellbeing;
  • their medical histories and the medical histories of their families;
  • their ages and likely future ability to look after or provide for a child's needs;
  • their commitment to having and bringing up a child or children;
  • their ability to provide a stable and supportive environment for any child born as a result of treatment;
  • their ability to meet the needs of any child or children who may be born as a result of treatment, including the implications of any possible multiple births or disability; and
  • any risk of harm to the child or children who may be born, including the risk of inherited disorders, problems during pregnancy and of neglect or abuse.

IVFHK will not be able to provide treatment for you unless you fulfill the requirements of the Code.

In addition, because female fecundity declines significantly with increasing female age, we and many other centres have found that IVF treatment has a very low success rate in women at their forties. The risk of miscarriage and congenital fetal abnormalities are also much in this age group. It is therefore important for couples to consider their treatment options very carefully when the female is over the age of 40.

Support Groups

We understand that it is very stressful to face the problems of infertility and to go through (ART) treatment cycles. We believe sharing and support from fellow couples going through similar stressful times can be very helpful. Below are the contacts for support groups in Hong Kong, please contact them directly. If your group likes to reach out to other couples who are experiencing similar situations, please let us know your contact details.

Please be reminded that these information are for your convenience and IVFHK is not responsible for the information and services these groups provide.

COPING

COPING is a support group for women who are experiencing problems getting or staying pregnant. It is a voluntary group run by people who are either having or have had fertility problems. Monthly informal, friendly meetings are held where ladies can get together and exchange information about treatments, doctors and clinics and experiences. Sometimes we arrange for speakers to address the group or we visit clinics.

Everyone is welcome to attend the meetings as long as they can understand English. To assist with advertising costs and any information we distribute, we do ask for a very small membership fee. Members are able to keep in touch with other people in the group and get invaluable support from those that may be experiencing similar things.
